Heroes EW article

Entertainment Weekly interview with Malcolm McDowell. I don't have a scanner so I typed it up. There's also a Q&A with Tim Kring. Beware, there are definitely spoilers in the article.

When the producers of Heroes asked celebrated British actor Malcolm McDowell to play the show's much-feared but never-seen villain, underworld figure Mr. Linderman, the man who was once Caligula felt inclined to say nay, as he was prepping to shoot Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween. Then he asked his son, budding film director Charlie, for advice. "He said, 'Are you kidding?! It's Heroes! You gotta do it!'" Good calls all around: McDowell's iconic profile made Linderman's March 5 debut even more powerful. "After 17 episodes of building this guy up, we knew we needed an actor with a certain weight," says executive producer Tim Kring. "And Malcolm certainly has that weight."

He's also no stranger to playing ruthless people. McDowell, 63, is best known for sporting fishhook eyelashes and dishing out ultraviolence in A Clockwork Orange "I do enjoy playing extreme people-mostly because they're nothing like me," says McDowell, who'll haunt Heroes for at least three episodes this season. (Kring wants him to stick around longer.) When the series returns on April 23, McDowell says Linderman will reveal himself to be not just a mere gangster, but "the mastermind behind all the shenanigans that are going on," including the political machinations of Nathan Petrelli (Adrian Pasdar) and the efforts of Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) to avert New York's nuclear incineration. McDowell's clearly pumped; during this interview, he excitedly let out a number of spoilers, from the ominous significance of the April 23 episodes title (".07%) to this: "The twist about Linderman is that he also has a power, which is-oh, I should probably hold back." (As will we.)

McDowell adds that he can't wait to film scenes for teh May21 season finale-and perhaps share screen time with Oka's time-warping, Star Trek-loving supergeek. "He's just marvelous, isn't he?" gushes the converted fanboy, before turning Linderman-eeeevil. "I can't wait to ask him for my sword back. Personally."

Burning Questions with Tim Kring

What's up with Mr. Sulu?
Hiro's father (George Takei) is "one of the several puppet masters pulling the strings," says exec producer Tim Kring. The other members of the illicit illuminati: Mr. Linderman and the Petrelli boys' mother, Angela.

What's the true mission of H.R.G.'s (Jack Coleman) hero-hunting company, Primatech?
"We're talking about a black ops agency that engages in a 'tag and release' monitoring program of the superpowered population," says Kring. "The mission won't be explicitly spelled out until season 2." However, he promises viewers will see "central headquarters, where the secrets are kept," by the end of season 1.

Does Sylar (Zachary Quinto) get his powers by eating brains?
"That'e the popular speculation," laughs Kring. "There is a connection between the powers and the brain- and Sylar has found [it]. Early in season 2, you'll find out what he's been doing with the brains.

Don't go to New York, then! ;p

[identity profile] bossygenius.livejournal.com 2007-03-10 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. Thank you!

I agree with the poster above: I knew Mama Petrelli was involved with the company (and seemingly not on the "good side")

I can't wait for the reveal of Linderman's power. He's the mastermind of Hiro's efforts? His power sure is kinda telepathic and powerful. I think somewhat like Professor Xavier's...

Can't wait for the reveals in Season 2... or at least for the hiatus to be over.

Thanks for posting this!

Oh, how exciting! While watching "Parasite" again, I started wondering whether Linderman had a power. And now I'm wondering what is is! Thanks so much for sharing this. :-D

This was sooo great! Thank you for posting! Malcolm Mcdowell, the converted fanboy is just too cute!

[identity profile] crippled.livejournal.com 2007-03-10 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ack, this is freaking wicked. Now I'm even MORE excited about the damn long hiatus being over.

And yay if all that means Sylar's still going to be around in season 2. He needs to be around for always.

I read on the Ninth Wonders message board, someone stating a few things in that particular article/interview, saying "OMG MAMA PETRELLI IS EVIL!" and I had a hard time believing it. It's interesting that they choose the word "illicit" rather than outright "evil" --

According to my Collins Canadian English Dictionary, illicit = illegal, prohibited, forbidden; whereas evil = (as an adjective) bad, harmful or as a noun is what is bad or harmful, sin.

Could be very clever. Mr Nakamura and Mrs Petrelli both have children who are special. Mr Linderman, apparently, is special. Could they be working to undermine, somehow, the work of Thompson and the other people Mr B work for? More shades-of-grey morality (I mean, Nathan's got it in his blood, I'm sure *g*). INQUIRING MINDS MUST KNOW. NOW, PLS. *looks sternly at Tim Kring*

You are the BEST for typing this all up. Nice to see "confirmation" about Linderman having powers, and those teeeny hints about what's to come. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for transcribing this!

Interesting article! I can't wait for season 2 and season 1 hasn't even finished!!!

I'm in love with your journal header. Makes me wish I was the Statue of Liberty...

I'm in love with your journal header. Makes me wish I was the Statue of Liberty...

I love that picture of Stephen. I wanted it for my header but I was already in love with my Sylar one. Luckily I was able to figure out how to do those rotating headers. I just keep clicking "refresh" to stare at the pretties.

[identity profile] morally-grey.livejournal.com 2007-03-10 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow - it rotates? That's damn cool! I don't blame you for having trouble deciding between Sylar and Stephen because they're both fantastic. ;)

Where did you find that Stephen picture by the way? I've not seen it around and simply must have it. *drools*

[identity profile] lay-of-luthien.livejournal.com 2007-03-10 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I scanned it from my Entertainment Weekly. Here's the picture

I just noticed your "Down in the Basement" icon. Nice!

Stephen should kiss Paul more often. It would make the world a better place.

[identity profile] morally-grey.livejournal.com 2007-03-10 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
He should indeed! I miss that to be honest. *sniff*

Which EW was this in? Because the one I have dated March 9, doesn't have anything like that.
:(

[identity profile] lay-of-luthien.livejournal.com 2007-03-11 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the March 16 issue. It has Ugly Betty on the cover.

[identity profile] bigbadwolfeboro.livejournal.com 2007-03-11 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
That hasn't arrived yet, but I'm looking foward to it. Thanks for typing it up : )

First off...rotating headers are teh awesome.

Second....my reactions to the spoilers were shamefully like Brandon from Galaxy Quest's "I KNEW IT!!!" XD

[identity profile] lay-of-luthien.livejournal.com 2007-03-14 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
You quoted Galaxy Quest and, therefore, you are teh awesome.
